In one of the more anticipated events for polo breeders and buyers, Ellerstina (ellerstina.com.ar) hosted its annual auction Tuesday, November 17th. This was the eighth of the fourteen auctioning events officially sanctioned for 2015 by the Argentine Polo Breeders Association (AACCP – criapoloargentino.com.ar). The season finale to be hosted by Alegría on December 9th.

When founding Ellerstina back in 1992, Gonzalo Pieres and Kerry Packer established a club, which has become synonymous with polo excellence. The partnership of Pieres, a nine-time Argentine Open champion and superlative horseman, with Packer, an Australian media mogul with a knack for managing prolific organizational structures, marked the birth of a new era in polo.

Pieres executed genetic selection for horse breeding, an unprecedented approach at the time. A move which afforded Ellerstina an early advantage on competing polo organizations. Enjoying the most prolific bloodlines in contemporary polo, each of Ellerstina’s yearly auctions have become an institutional attraction for buyers and competitors, who continue to close-in on the historical genetic edge.

An elegant affair by all means, a candle-lit pathway led guests to the centre auction ring. Hollywood-like action shots of previously sold fillies now debuting in the 2015 Argentine Triple Crown season, were mounted at the entrance; a reminder to buyers that they were shopping at the right store.

At the end of the bidding and selling session, a grand total of thirty-five products were sold for $2,079,000 USD; an average sales price of $59,400 USD. Top sale of the evening was Open Messi, a two-and-a-half year old stallion by Lizzie and Sportivo, for $155,000 USD.

Ellerstina also featured a distinguished selection of embryos by the likes of Easy Go, Open Guillermina, Habana, Grappa Galera, and Open Carei, among others. An approach that was well received by buyers, as thirteen embryos were sold for a total of $494,000 USD; an average sales price of $38,000 USD.

A generally accepted category to compare with other remates; average sales price for Ellerstina’s twenty unbroken fillies was $69,250 USD. The top sale in the filly category was Open Insignia, by Ellerstina Medalla and Sportivo, which was auctioned for $140,000 USD.

Open Insignia was the only filly that sold above $100,000 USD. A notable statistic which pales in comparison to La Dolfina, which sold three fillies above the mentioned threshold. As the auction season progresses, the market is establishing a price ceiling for the very best two year old prospects in polo. To sell at those prices though, illustrious dams such as Cuartetera, Hannah Montana, Irenita Suegra, and Lizzie are a must.

November 19th auction activity resumes with Los Machitos at “El Monte”, Pilar. –Carlos Naish, Special Correspondent
