REMATES (2015) – LA IRENITA

La Irenita Polo’s Irenita Oriental, daughter of seven-time Triple Crown competitor Ellerstina Suegra, sold for $105,000 USD

In one of the more anticipated events for polo breeders and buyers, La Irenita (lairenita.com) hosted its annual auction Thursday, November 5th. This was the second of the fourteen auctioning events officially sanctioned by the Argentine Polo Breeders Association (AACCP – criapoloargentino.com.ar). The season finale to be hosted by Alegría on December 9th.

With over twenty five years of experience in the equine transport and breeding industries, Jorge Mac Donough has worked alongside his sons Matias (former 9-goaler) and Pablo (five-time Argentine Open winner), to build one of the top embryo transfer centres in polo. Carrying ownership in a champion-proven herd of stallions (Clarin, Irenita Electo, Irenita Lunatico, and Dolfina Cuarteto, among others), La Irenita ranks among the leading and most innovative breeders in the sport.

The auction featured La Irenita’s top selection of unbroken yearlings and fillies. Bidding and selling was conducted by auction firm Heguy Hermanos y Compania. At the end of the session, nineteen products were sold for a total of $855,000 USD; an average sales price of $42,750 USD. Two-year-old Irenita Oriental, by E. Suegra and Clarin, was the top sale of the evening at $105,000 USD. Ellerstina Suegra, now a brood mare, was Pablo Mac Donough’s top pony; seven-time Triple Crown participant, and winner of the 2007 Lady Susan Townley Award.

Bloodline excellence was a predominant theme throughout the auction. The majority of featured fillies were foaled by former Triple Crown participants. Moreover, Irenita Lujuria, Irenita Larrusa, Irenita Mundana, Irenita Zapateada and Irenita Gustosa, all have dams currently participating in the Hurlingham and Argentine (Palermo) Open. Buyers benefited from several bargains, as the average price for these five was $38,000 USD.

Prior to official bidding in the tent, guests and friends enjoyed cocktails and appetizers while gathering around the outdoor viewing ring to observe the horses. The event was sponsored by Escorihuela Gascon Wines and Cerveza Imperial.

November 9th auction activity resumes with Lovelocks Polo Stud at La Indiana Polo Club, Pilar. –Carlos Naish, Special Correspondent
