The Coronation Cup was first presented in 1911 by the Ranelagh Club, to commemorate King George V’s coronation. The Indian P.A. team (Capt. Leslie Cheape, Capt. Shah Mirza Beg, Capt. Ralph Gerald Ritson, Capt. Vivian Lockett), were the first winners of the trophy. The massive cup, which at the time cost 250 pounds, was played for by the winners of the Hurlingham, Ranelagh, and Roehampton Open Championships and the Inter-Regimental Tournament. This format remained in place until 1939. In 1953, upon Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, an international tournament took place; participants were Argentina, Chile, England, Spain, and the United States. Argentina (Eduardo Braun Cantilo, Ernesto Lalor, Alex Mihanovich, Juan Carlos Alberdi) beat England in the final game 7–6. It was not played for again until 1971, and ever since it has been an annual match between England and different visiting teams.

Polo has been an Olympic sport on five occasions. However, there is much debate as to whether or not the 1900 Games should be considered an official event as far as polo is concerned. Olympic games authority Dr. Bill Mallon writes: “It is difficult to make sense of what was and was not the ‘Olympic’ polo tournament in 1900. Many different match scores, tournaments results, and team rosters have been seen in the varying sources.”
